Mentorship in Motion: Champions of Mentoring Award

Girls on the Run Greater Richmond Executive Director, Catherine Estevez recieves Champions of Mentoring Award

When Girls on the Run participants lace up their sneakers, they’re preparing for much more than a run — they’re stepping into a season of mentorship, confidence, and connection.

That’s why we’re so proud to share that Girls on the Run of Greater Richmond has been named a recipient of the MENTOR Virginia 2025 Champions of Mentoring Award! This honor celebrates organizations across Virginia that are transforming lives and strengthening communities through meaningful mentor relationships — something that’s at the heart of everything we do.

Mentorship Woven Into Every Mile

At Girls on the Run, mentorship doesn’t happen behind a desk or in a classroom. It happens while stretching before practice, sharing stories after school, or taking a deep breath before tackling another activity.

Our volunteer coaches show up week after week, not just to lead lessons or run activities, but to listen, encourage, and believe in every girl’s potential. They help girls build confidence, resilience, and the joy of moving forward, both during and long after the season ends.

Through these meaningful relationships, girls learn that they can face challenges, lift each other up, and achieve more than they ever imagined. By the end of the season, when each participant crosses the 5K finish line, that moment represents so much more than physical endurance. It’s a reflection of growth, courage, and the bonds built along the way.

“This recognition from MENTOR Virginia shines a light on the incredible relationships that form through Girls on the Run,” says Catherine Estevez, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Greater Richmond. “Our coaches model compassion, confidence, and resilience — and help girls see their own strength and the power of uplifting one another.”

A Celebration of Community

This award isn’t just a recognition of our program — it’s a celebration of the volunteers, families, schools, and supporters who make mentorship possible. Behind every strong girl is a network of encouragement, cheering her on and reminding her that she belongs and is capable of amazing things.

From our dedicated coaches to the donors who make participation free for girls who need it most, this honor belongs to everyone who believes in the mission of Girls on the Run.

Looking Ahead: More Miles, More Mentors, More Impact

As we look to 2026, Girls on the Run Greater Richmond is excited to expand our reach and welcome even more girls into our community of empowerment. Our goal is simple — to continue creating spaces where girls can be seen, supported, and celebrated for exactly who they are.

And there’s no better way to see this mission in motion than at our upcoming Fall 5K Celebration on November 16 at Bryan Park. It’s a day filled with joy, color, and community — where every girl crosses the finish line knowing she can do hard things.

We’re deeply grateful to MENTOR Virginia for recognizing the power of mentorship in motion, and to our entire Girls on the Run family for helping us keep that momentum going, one mile and one smile at a time.
